Urban Roots Seed Starting Guide
It’s the best time of year! Time to start planning your 2021 garden. If you’re planning to grow anything from seed, it’s time to start them! Seed starting doesn’t have to be complicated, but there are some materials and equipment you’re going to need.
Grow Lights
Unfortunately we just don’t get enough sunlight here in Buffalo to successfully grow from seeds without supplemental lighting. Even your brightest windowsill will not get enough light to support seedlings. Luckily, Urban Roots carries an affordable line of grow lights and bulbs.
Clamp Light
Clamp light fixtures are great because you can put them anywhere, and they reflect a lot of bright light into the space. Be sure to keep yours as close to the soil surface as you can. As your seedlings grow taller, you can move the light up.
Grow Bulbs
These full-spectrum bulbs are great for seedlings and houseplants alike.
Containers
Seed starting trays are perfect for holding peat pellets, seedling cells, or any small containers used for starting seeds.
This greenhouse is the perfect set-up for any first-time seed grower. It contains everything you need to start up to 24 plants, and is great for small spaces.
Growing Medium
This sterile mix is specially formulated for growing seeds.
Just add water and these pellets expend into self-contained growing vessels. Perfect for starting seeds, and easy to transplant directly into the garden.
Heat Mat
Though not necessary, a heat mat will help your seeds to germinate faster and grow stronger.
Don’t Forget the Seeds!
Edibles
Urban Roots carries a wonderful selection of vegetable and herb seeds.
Flowers
Add some beauty to your garden, and attract pollinators that your vegetable plants need.
