Alexa Mathes

Alexa joined the Urban Roots Co-op in 2022 when she moved back to her hometown of Buffalo. Prior to that, she lived in New York City for almost 15 years, working as an advertising copywriter and as a science writer/editor at Scholastic.

Currently, she works remotely at Newsela, an edtech platform for schools. There, she oversees the development of STEM articles and manages the STEM lesson creation team. She is an experienced writer/editor/reporter, people manager, and project manager. She has an MA in science journalism from New York University and a BA in English and Psychology from the Johns Hopkins University.

In her free time, Alexa and her husband have been building a native plant garden in their Snyder home. They love visiting Urban Roots with their two children for advice and inspiration. She cooks veggie-friendly dishes, goes bike riding with family, runs with friends, and is a member of the Amherst Symphony Orchestra, both as a musician (French horn) and a board member.
